Okay, so here's the deal for those of you who aren't in the know. NRK (The Norwegian State broadcaster) has selected 21 Songs of the 700 songs submitted to compete for the Ticket to Düsseldorf. I'm pretty sure they are gonna follow their 2009 winning formula so that's what i'm going on...even though certain facts have not been confirmed (But we'll get to those later)
Anywho.... So here's the deal. The 21 songs have been divided into 3 Semi Finals, In each Semi Final, a Televote will select the 2 Songs who will advance to the Final in Oslo on 02/12. The Televote will also select 2 Songs who will advance to a Second Chance Semi Final, which will be held on 02/05 in Sarpsborg. In addition to those 6 Songs, 2 "Wild Cards" will be selected (In 2009, they were the highest scoring 5th place song and a song chosen by the readers of VG. In 2010, they were the 2 highest scoring 5th place songs).
So let's get started.
The first Semi Final was held on 01/16 in Brekstad. The songs were :
Number - Title - Translation - Artist - Author(s)
01 - Guns And Boys - Carina Dahl - Carina Dahl (M & L), Nanna Martorell (M & L) and Hanne Sørvaag (M & L)
02 - Daisy - Use Me - Jim André Bergsted (M & L)
03 - Vardlokk - Song Of The Soul - Helen Bøksle - Helene Bøksle (M), Sindre Hotvedt (M), Knut Avenstroup Haughen (M) Cecilie Larsen (L)

07 - Not That Easy (Ah - Åh - Ah - Åh) - Åste And Rikke - Rikke Normann (M & L)
My Reviews -
01 - Guns And Boys - After a few listens, this song stops sounding like just noise and starts sounding awesome. It just kinda gets into your system...you almost start to crave it....06 Points out of 10
02 - Daisy - I kinda get it...it's like a modernish pop/rock song...not bad. - 04 Points out of 10
03 - Vardlokk - OMG! This song went from "Boring, Despereate and tragically Norwegian" to "OMG! Schlanger Ballad Awesomeness) 06 Points out of 10
04 - Alt Du Vil Ha - Ugh...i'm sorry i just think that this sort of thing is lame. 03 out of 10
05 - Jobbe Litt Mindre Og Tjene Litt Mer - Ugh. This is just terrible. 1 point (For trying to be original) out of 10
06 - Trenger Mer - FINALLY! Awesome! Just so nordic and schanger and awesome! 10 Points.... 09 Points out of 10.
07 - Not That Easy - Erm....i''m getting it...getting it....and GOT it! 07 Points out 10.
My Selection -
To choose my favorites, I listened to the songs on repeat over the course of 2 Days and then awarded them a number of Televotes based well just what felt like the right number of votes. The top 4 Songs advanced to the Second Round, where I listened to them over the course of 2 Days and awarded my final placements.

I’m assuming things are going to run that same as last year (I.E. that the 2 highest scoring 5th place songs will receive a wild card to the Second Chance Round), even though that hasn’t been made “Official”. In such a Case, since “Daisy” received more votes then “Fire Below”, it will advance to the Second Chance Round.

Norway - Melodi Grand Prix Semi Final 02
The Second Semi Final was held on 01/22 in Florø.
The songs were:
Number – Title – Translation – Artist – Author(s)
01 – I’ll Be Yours – Pernille And Marius – Ovi (M & L), Johanna Dernker (M & L), Björn Djupström (M & L)
02 – You Can Depend On Me – Babel Fish – Halvor Holter (M & L), Tarjei Van Ravens (M & L)

My Reviews –
01 – I’ll Be Yours – OMFG! I LOVE this song. I just ADORE it! It so cute and jazzy it just makes me want to sing and dance and swing. 09 Points out of 10.
02 – You Can Depend On Me – Eh…nice message but the singers voice kinda gets on my nerves after a couple listens. Other than that, it’s pretty non special and boring. 04 Points out of 10
03 – Hungry For You (Gipsydance) – OMG! Haha this song makes me wanna jump up and do ridiculous things. I mean, I’m sure it won’t get out of the SF, but I can name at least 3 Eastern European Countries (Eyes Moldova, Slokavia and Lithuania) where this song would have/could have taken the National Final by Storm. I think it was supposed to be submitted there, but there was some paper work mistake. Just a fun, awesome song. 07 Points Out of 10
04 – Sand – Eh…I can give or take this song. I mean it’s trying really hard, but it’s just missing something to make it special. 04 Points out of 10.
05 – Oh, Oh (Puppy Love) – Aw…I get it. For some reason this song seems very Maltese to me (ESC fans will know what I’m talking about). All in all, it’s a cute pop song that would be like 15 on the Charts for a couple weeks in summer and then be doomed to a Lifetime of being sung badly at Karaoke bars. 07 out of 10.
06 – You’re Like A Melody. Done. Selection Over. Song Found. Brilliant. Amazing. Perfect. Winner. Done. Done. Done. Done. Done. Norway, this is your song. Oslo again in 2012. It just has everything. If it doesn’t win, it’s because it was just way way to good for you. 14 Points out of 10.
07 – Allergic – Of course I love this song. I really enjoy the beat and drama of it. But after a few listens it kinda loses a bit of it’s magic.

My Reviews –
01 – Nothing Remains – Man…you’d think with the plethora of authors who conspired to create this song, they’d come up with something half way decent. Fail. 03 Points out of 10.
02 – Gone With The Wind – YES! Yes! Yes! Go Norway! R And B at it’s best. Awesome. Amazing. Go Norway! – 11 Points out of 10.
03 – SOS – Dude WTF Norway! Way to throw in a bunch of amazing songs at the last minute. Awesome dance songs. I love the like bell tones that regulate this song. Great build. 08 Points out of 10.
04 – Like Dreamers Do – Aw Norway…look at you. Throwing in a cute “Group” ballad as if it had a chance. Aw and it’s about love. So cute! 05 Points out of 10.
05 – Dance Tonight – Erm… is this song in Norwegian? With an English title? Brilliant. Way to go Norway. Way to showcase your basic comprehension of the English language…but give up halfway. But still… AWESOME song. 07 Points out of 10.
06 – Haba Haba – OMG NORWAY! WTF! Again! Way to throw in a bunch of AMAZING songs at the last minute. AWESOME song. FUCKING AMAZING! Just AHHHHHHH So Awesome! 10 Points Out of 10.

Thoughts before i start voting for my final -
You're Like A Melody is clearly my winner. It simply the best song. Period. The best norwegian song in years. If those crazy norwegians have an ounce of sense, it'll sweep the final by at least 200 000 votes.
Right on it's heels are "Gone With The Wind" and "Trenger Mer". I just can't get over how amazing "Gone With The Wind" is. Maybe it'll wear off with time...but i wouldn't count on it. Vardlokk could be a surprise, as it's been so far. It only JUST got through to my Second Chance round, only JUST got through it's first match and then ended up beating "Hungry For You"! It's def growing on me.
"Allergic" is also doing better and better the more and more i listen to it.
I'm for sure losing my adoration of "I'll Be Yours" and "Not That Easy", but maybe i'll rediscover it with time.
"Haba Haba" is just awesome. Who knows where it'll end up!
To Select their 2011 song, the Finns held 3 Rounds. First, YLE (The Finnish Broadcaster) chose 15 songs from the Publicly Submitted songs to compete in an Internet Quarter Final, where Internet voters chose 3 Songs to join the 12 commissioned songs in the Semi Final Round. Then, the 15 Semi Finalists were divided into 3 Semi Finals, where a Televote chose the 3 Finalists and an “Expert” Jury chose 1 Wild Card. In the Final, there will be 2 Rounds of Televoting. The First Round will select the top 3 Songs and the Second Round will select the Winner.
In order to be prepared for any result, I will present 2 National Finals for Finland, the First with My favorite 3 songs from the Quarter Final competing in the Semi Finals. The Second will use the 3 Songs selected by the Finnish Public.

Final –
In the Final, I chose my winner in 2 Rounds. In the First Round, I listened to the 10 Songs 5 times and awarded points after each Listen. The top 3 Songs advanced to the Second Round, where I awarded Televotes based on what felt right.
Iceland tends to be tricky business. I say this because, well, Iceland has a tendency to send understated songs. In past years, they’ve a tendency to get lost in the Feb – March National Final Season shuffle for me. I’ll listen to the songs one or two times, select my favorites and then move onto more exciting things (Like Sweden). Often times, the songs I chose as my favorites in Feb/March fall out of favor in the Summer, when I got back and review that years ESC (Because I have more time, I’m bored and there isn’t like a feelings of “I need to do this now because Melodifestivalen is on in 20 minutes and Melodi Grand Prix just ended so I have 30 minutes to figure out who to root for and about what songs I should be indignant if they don’t get through….otherwise what will ESC forum think of me?). For example, in 2006, “Tíl Hamingju Ísland” was my run away favorite and I barely listened to the other songs…but over time, I’m seriously considering “Þér Við Hlið´the top spot in my fantasy ESC 2006. Likewise, in 2008 I was completely outraged and angry that “Got No Love” didn’t win their NF, but they were sending some boring, lame song “Is it True?” (Which placed 2nd overall at ESC 2009). But that summer, not only did “Is It True” make me fall in love with it and become my overall winner for Iceland, it grew to be in my top 5 overall for ALL of ESC 2009.
Basically, the point is, sometimes the Icelandic Songs take some time to capture your heart…so this year, I’m trying to give them the attention they Deserve. In recognition of this fact, I’m granting the Icelandic National Finals a few things I don’t normally do. First, I’m listening to each song on repeat at least 4 times before giving any sort of Judgment (Usually, I don’t do this except for truly awesome songs as I believe I can learn to love any mediocre song if I listen to it enough). Second, I’m not giving my final points in each SF until after I’ve watched all the videos on youtube at least 3 times (Usually, I think this is unfair, because you only have a 3 minute performance at Eurovision to win over the crowd, so I extend the same courtesy to the songs in each NF. I only watch each song Once before I give my final rankings).
So for the Selection this year, this is how I’m gonna roll. For each Semi Final, I will award votes 4 times. The First time, I will divide 8, 000 points between the songs based on my First listen opinion. The Second time, I will divide 18, 000 points between the songs after 5 listens. The Third time, I will divide 25, 000 points between the songs after watching their performance on youtube. The Final time, I will divide 40, 000 points between the songs after one last listen. The 2 Songs with the highest scores from each Semi Final will advance to the Final. The 3rd place songs from each Semi Final will advance to a 3rd Semi Final, where I will select one last Finalist.
In the Actual Selection, 15 Songs were presented in 3 Semi Finals. In each Semi Final, a Televote chose the 2 Finalists.

01 - Lagið Þitt – Starts off a little boring, and then theres like 20 Second of potential, but it fades. Eh…04 Points out of 10.
02 - Ef Ég Hefði Vængi – Almost catchy, but still boring. 03 Points out of 10.
03 – Elísabet – Yawn. Boring ballad sung by a guy who’s best feature is that he showed up with a beard singing to our about some girl I guess he might have liked? But broke his heart? Or like a car he once had that was more memborable then this song?
04 – Huldumey – FINALLY! A decent song. It’s meaningful and the performance is almost flawless (She went off key just a tiny bit at the start of the second verse…but oh well). Touching but not boring. 08 Points out of 10.
05 - Ástin Mín Eina – Aw. In a word, it’s cute. Its clear that she’s got potential. It’s a great first start, clear and nice, calm and beautiful. 06 Points out of 10.

Overall, a MUCH Better round than the first round.
01 – Nótt – Winner. Clearly. Winner. Yohanna can do wrong at Eurovision. She should quit her day job (I’m assuming it’s something like being a Fisherman or like erm…I’m pretty sure that’s just what all Icelandic people do…right? Oh Except Silvia Night, who just runs around being fabulous and loved). Yohanna knew that after her glorious Second place in 2009, she shouldn’t tarnish her immaculate reputation by just competing year after year with any old song she found lying around (Ahem..Ahem…Briggitta). Just a magical, tremendous song. Of course it’ll win Iceland. I’m sure RUV (The Icelandic broadcaster) just organized a National Selection as opposed to just sending this song the moment they heard it was to fill in some programming gaps. Go YOHANNA! I want to have your babies!
10 Points out of 10.
02 – Segðu Mér – Oh Iceland and their ballads. This one is actually quite good. She does an awesome job of performing and the song has a great build. 07 Points Out of 10.
03 – Þessi Þrá – Ok. So at first I dismissed this song as just something that was okay...but by the 3rd listen, it just clicked with me. Now I love it. It’s just so awesome. Such a great duet, such a great build. All the meaning of a heartfelt ballad but in no way boring. Awesome. Clock it, I’m in love. 08 points out of 10.
04 – Beint Á Ská – Aw. Look at her trying. This song is listenable, but it’s just kind boring and played out. 04 Points out of 10.
05 – Eldgos – It takes a few listens for this song to sound like anything more then just a huge amount of noise thrown together. I’m thinking it’ll get the ticket to the Final, just because it sounds like it’d have an insane performance and it’s the only fast song in this SF. Well, I mean even after you start to like it, it’s still just a lot of noise thrown together. It’s just ok. 05 Points out of 10.
P.S. can I just say that songs like Nótt fill me with such passion and joy, that it makes all the terrible ESC songs worth it just to find Gems like that?

Excellent. Even thought the awesomeness, sincerity and magic of Þessi Þrá
Lost out to the just craziness and drama of Eldgos, but the important thing is that Nótt got through. I’m 100% positive that it will, should and must win the ticket to Düsseldorf. If not, I will boycott all the numerous and every day products I use from Iceland….like erm…well…. Anywho.
