SF 02 - 18 Denmark 2011 -

Let me start by saying that this year, Denmark brought it’s A Game. By leaps and bounds the best Melodi Grand Prixe (Danish Eurovision Pre Selection) ever. By leaps and bounds. Usually, Denmark is always good for at least 2 just drop dead amazing songs and maybe 3 pretty awesome songs. But this year, they are clearly planning on winning in Düsseldorf. Of the 10 Songs, 4 are just absolutely amazing and life changing, 3 are awesome and I can think of more than a few previous Danish Selections they would have won. Of course, there’s the obligatory Nordic ballads and “Rock” songs. However, like Norway and Finland, they are presenting more and more Swedish style songs and I for one couldn’t be happier.

So here are the songs -
Number – Title (Translation) - Artist
01 – Sleepless – Anna Noa
02 – Let Your Heart Be Mine – Jenny Berggren
03 – Drømmen (The Dream) – Jeffery
04 – 25 Hours A Day – Le Freak
05 – You’ll Get Me Through – Sine Vig Kjaegaard
06 – Hvad Hjertet Lever Af (What The Heart Lives On) – Stine Kinck
07 – Hollywood Girl – Lee Hutton
08 – Emma – Christopher Brandt
09 – Black And Blue – Kat And Justin Hopkins
10 – New Tomorrow – A Friend In London

After the first listen, here are my rankings –
1st – 25 Hours A Day
2nd – Let Your Heart Be Mine
3rd – Hvad Hjertet Lever AF
4th – Black And Blue
5th – Sleepless
6th – Hollywood Girl
7th – Drømmen
8th – New Tomorrow
9th – You’ll Get Me Through
10th – Emma

but of course, after a few listens I’m sure that’ll all change.

My Reviews –
01 – Sleepless – Anne Noe -

Ugh. Can i just marry this song? Perfection. Love. Just so simple and beautiful and just so fucking awesome! I just can't get over just how just perfect it is. I'm not gonna lie, at first i just didn't get it...but after a couple listens i did. And my life is so much better for that. This song is just evertyhing a song should be. 10 Points out of 10.
02 – Let Your Heart Be Mine – Jenny Berggren -

Such a strong song! Great beat and just amazing build. 07 Points out of 10.
03 – Drømmen (The Dream) – Jeffrey -

Love. Love. Love. Love. Goregous and perfect Danish ballad. Fast enough to be listenable, pretty enough to be touching, and sincere enough to be loveable. This song just makes me ever so happy. It just makes me smile and want to just sway and sing and love. 05 Points out of 10.
04 – 25 Hours A Day – Le Freak -

F.U.C.K.I.N.G. Brilliant. It just doesn't get any better than this.  I just can't express how much i simply ADORE this song. Meaningful lyrics? Check. Danceable? Check. Great beat and build? Check. You just have to listen to it to love it. 10 Points out of 10.
05 – You’ll Get Me Through – Sine Vig Kjaergaard -

Denmark has a habit of presenting just hauntingly beautiful ballads sung by amazingly talented women. Said songs have a tendency to grow on me and over time, more then a couple have touched my heart so much that I’ve actually ranked them above dance/schlager songs that I initially rated much higher (See “In A Moment Like This” from 2010, “Underneath My Skin” from 2009 and “Husker Du” from 2007). But once again, it’s just a spectacular, incomparable year for Denmark, so I don’t see this song getting much higher now matter how much I adore it. 05 Points out of 10.
06 – Hvad Hjertet Lever Af (What The Heart Lives On) – Stine Kinck -

Ugh. How perfect and amazing is this? So retro but modern....i just can't help but just adore it. I have yet to listen to more than 7 seconds of it without getting up and dancing! It's just one of those songs you can't help but love!. Ugh! Just so much perfection! And what about that chorus?! How much do you love it??!?!?! BEST. DANISH. NATIONAL. FINAL. EVER! 09 Points out of 10!
07 – Hollywood Girl – Lee Hutton -

Awesome. Just a perfect build and just the perfect mix of sincere ballad start that grows into an awesome dance song. The chorus gets a little old and I feel like they’re pretending this song has more substance then it actually does. Still, awesome. 05 Points out of 10.
08 – Emma – Christopher Brandt -

Truth be told, I kinda enjoy this heartfelt ballad. I really like that it’s in Danish and has a kinda Techno balladey feel. He does a super good job of being sincere and even though I have a tendency to get annoyed by Male voices, I really groove on his. However, in such an amazing year, it just can’t hold a candle to the other songs. In the context of this NF, with these other 9 songs, I’d have to rate it 04 Points out of 10. However, based solely on the song, I’d have to say 04 Points out of 10.
09 – Black And Blue – Kat And Justin Hopkins -

Perfect. A just brilliant Danish duet in the “In A Moment Like This” vein. Great build and message. You can feel the love and emotions in the words and music. Just awesome. My heart just jumps when Kat (the girl) starts singing. I just adore her voice. It just touches my soul. 07 Points out of 10.
10 – New Tomorrow – A Friend In London -

A simple gorgeous rock ballad. After a couple listens, I just love it. It’s so simple and truthful. But again (I feel like I’ve said this a thousand times so far) its just a brilliant year. So, no matter how awesome it is, it just can’t compete. 06 Points out of 10.

Selection –
The winner was selected in 3 Rounds of voting. In the First Round, an “Expert” Jury and a Televote chose the top 4 Songs. In the Second Round, the 4 Songs were divided into 2 Pairs and a SMS vote chose the Advancing song from each pair. In the Third Round, a SMS vote chose the Winner.

In the Second Round, I divided the songs into 2 Pairs and awarded Televotes to chose the 2 Advancing Songs. In the Third Round, I awarded Televotes to chose the winner.

Comments -

Once again, i cannot stress enough just how much this NF rocks. Best. Danish. NF. Ever. Bar None. I mean common! Sleepless? 25 Hours A Day? Hvad Hjerter Lever Af? Black And Blue? It's just so unfair that the Danes couldn't spread these songs out! I mean Sleepless, 25 Hours A Day and Hvad Hjerter Lever Af are all just simply brilliant and amazing and just SCREAM Winner! It's just so unfair and so Danish to make me chose between them! It's taken me literally months and hundreds of listens to get to the point i'm at now. And, that said, i still surprise myself! I mean it's taken this long for "Sleepless" and "Hvad Hjerter Lever Af" to become my top 2, surpassing my early favorites of "Let Your Heart Be Mine" and yes even "25 Hours A Day".  I mean "Sleepless" will ALWAYS be winner, if for nothing else but principal. Both "25 Hours A Day" and "Hvad Hjerter Lever Af" are prone to fits of passion and moods....but Sleepless is my Winner.

My Reviews -

01 - Lucky You - Awesome Swedish Schlager Pop! Brill! Great chorus! So catchy and fun! 08 Points Out Of 10.
02 - Tid Att Andas - A very pretty ballad. Haunting and heartfelt. 05 Points Out Of 10.
03 - Enemy - Nice build and i dig the Attitude. It's a good mid tempo song and well you can really tell the emotion behind it is real. 05 Points Out Of 10.
04 - The King - HAHA! Dancey, cheezy and just fun. Retro and vaguely Elvis and big bandy. Other than that, eh it's just alright. 04 Points Out Of 10.
05 - I Thought It Was Forever - The brilliant and perfect Shirley Clamp (Mr. Memory MF 2003, Min Kärlek 2nd in MF 2004, Att Älska Dig 4th in MF 2005, Med Hjärtat Fyllt Af Ljus MF 2009) is back! And she brought some friends! AWESOME song. So Shirley. She can do no wrong. Amazing build and feeling and voice and just everything's perfect! 09 Points Out Of 10.
06 - No One Else Could - Eh...he's trying hard but i'm just not getting it. It sounds like a mess of noise. It's dancey and alright, but it's just lacking that special spark. Typical of Him (See MF 2007). 05 Points Out Of 10.
07 - Spring För Livet - A nice jazzy breathe of air for Sweden. Kinda subtle and catchy...i'm sure i will grow to just adore this song in time. 06 Points Out Of 10.
08 - Popular - AWESOME! Brilliant and dancey and fun! A real contender for the Ticket to Düsseldorf! 09 Points Out Of 10.

My Reviews –

01 – The Hunter – A cute/silly but catchy pop/rock song. 05 Points out of 10.
02 – Better Or Worse – She’s the other “Web Qualifier”, but it’s actually kinda good. Catchy and Swedish ☺ 06 Points out of 10.
03 – En Blick Och Nånting Händer – It’s kinda retro and fun in that cute Swedish 1970’s schalger way. 05 Points out of 10.
04 – Alive – A beautiful Swedish power ballad, and she has the vocal skills to back it up. Keep an eye on this one ☺ 07 Points out of 10.
05 – Run – Cute, sincere boy rock song, but it’s pretty decent. 06 Points out of 10.
06 – E Det Fel På Mig – It’s no secret that I would take a bullet for Linda. She’s came to fame in 2005, with my Favorite MF song ever “Alla Flickor” (Seriously, I love that song pretty much more than all but like 2 ESC songs ever) and she fucking nailed it again. Amazing. Brilliant. Best Song. 7843 Points out of 10.
07 – Leaving Home – Eh, pretty boring and just..well that's it. Boring boy ballad. 03 Points out of 10.

For reals, if Linda Bengtzing doesn't win, i'll freak. If she doesn't even get a Second Chance, i place a pox on all of Sweden for the year. I hope their song fails (unless it's Something In Your Eyes or I'm in Love)

Dance Alone is also great and might win, but i'm pretty sure it'll get through to the final. It's awesome at first listen, but loses some magic after that. Alive deserves at LEAST a second chance and if Run gets through, it'll be a compliment to the taste of the Swedish voters.

SF 01 - 08 Switzerland 2011

Switzerland. For some reason, i always thing that Switzerland falls into the group of nations that have pulled out for a couple years like Malta, Andorra, Austria and Italy. Then i'm surprised that they've done every year since like 2004. Well that pretty much says it all. The Swiss are a funny sort of people and i have very low expectations for them  They're like Tila Tequila, they'll try anything once, twice if it gives them any sort of attention. Anywho, so this year, for the first time since 2004 (when the disastrous  "Celebrate" was chosen and swiftly got last place in the Semi Final and the only "Nul Points" since the Semi Final system was introduced) they decided to organize a public National Final. But no matter how hard they try, the biggest problem with having the Swiss public select the song is that they are Swiss, and therefore just terrible at most things. The Swiss National Final was typical of Switzerland in that it mainly consisted of boring songs, with the mandatory ridiculous song sung in the oh so unique language of Switzerland thrown in. But there were some gems. 12 Songs were presented and a Televote chose the winner.

Comments -
"In Love For A While" takes a couple listens to get, but it's not bad considering it's Switzerland. Still, "Just Me" was by leaps and bounds the best song. And yes, it's that Sarah Burgess. You don't know which one? *Prepare for sarcasm* DUDE! It's the Sarah Burgess, who was cut from American Idol in Hollywood week in 2007! And decided to go on vacation in Switzerland and call it a "European Tour"...until she realized that she had no claim to fame or money and so has been there since on "Permanent European Tour"....whatever that means.

Still....awesome!

My Reviews –

01 – Seven Days And Seven Nights – hmm. So I don’t know exactly what to think of this song. I mean it’s typical Swedish Pop/Rock, but honestly…the singers voice really bugs me. I feel like I’d like it more if someone else sang it. 04 Points out of 10.

02 – My Heart’s Refusing Me. I really, really want to love this song. Scratch that, I really really want to love the awesome dance song that follows the 3 minutes of build up. It’s just a lot of “getting ready to be awesome”. But it doesn’t get there. It just stays….kinda flat. Eh. 05 Points out 10.

03 – Ge Mig En Spanjor (Give Me A Spaniard) – OMG! This is like a BAD cover of the amazing Swedish Drag Duo AfterDark. This song is trying real hard to reach a very select group of people, who no doubt will love this. I’m not one of them. 04 Points out of 10.

04 - Vaken I En Dröm (Awake In A Dream). Elisabeth is awesome. She has TONS of ESC experience (For Sweden – 2nd in MF 1981, Winner of MF 1982, MF 1984, MF 1990, 3rd in MF 2002 with the just so swingy “Vem É Dé Du Vill Ha”. Norway – WON ESC 1985 for Norway, went to ESC 1994 for Norway, 2nd in ESC 1996 for Norway…the list just goes on and on). Anywho, this song is just ever so delicate and graceful and gorgeous. Ugh. Love. 07 Points out of 10.

05 – I’m In Love –
Fucking. Sanna. She does it again! She’s gorgeous and perfection and everything that makes me want to move to Sweden. This song is amazing and perfect. Winner. 15 Points out of 10.

06 – Oh My God! – This song is just ever so quirky and adorable. I kinda love it and I can’t help but bob along to it. 07 Points out of 10.

07 – Elektrisk (Electric) – Brilliant. Love. Adore. Awesome. Great. 09 Points out of 10.

08 – Like Suicide – Eh, I get it. You’re a young Swedish male trying to be sincere and classy with a noble ballad. It’s kinda good. 06 Points out of 10.

How I think it will go –
1st – I’m in Love
2nd – Vaken I En Dröm
3rd – Oh My God!
4th – Elektrisk
5th – Like Suicide
6th – My Heart Is Refusing Me
7th – Seven Days And Seven Nights
8th – Ge Mig En Spanjor

My Voting –

To select my Favorites, I decided to follow the same format as the actual MF.
Round 01 -

SF 02 - 19 Ireland 2011

Ah Ireland. ESC's most winning Country (Winner 1970, 1980, 1987,  the only hat trick 1992, 1993, 1994 and then again in 1996) has not fared so hot recently. This year, they decided to do their National Selection  in an X Factor style, with each of the 5 Entries being "Mentored" by a well known music industry Irish person. In the mix was Jedward, which is a pair of twins who are basically the Justin Bieber of Ireland/U.K. They came 6th in the U.K.'s X Factor, basically because of thier hair, cheeziness and ability to make every 12 year girl have her ovaries pop out whenever they are even mentioned. They've even named a cultural phenomena after them ("The Jedward Factor" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jedward). Finally, the winner was chosen by an "Expert" Jury (67%) and a Televote (33%).

Songs -
01 - Talking With Jennifer - Don Mescall
02 - Lipstick - Jedward
03 - Shine On - Bling
04 - Send Me An Angel - The Vard Sisters
05 - Falling - Nikki Kavanagh

To select my winner, I divided 100 points between the songs 2 times and 200 points 1 time (First after listening to each song 5 times, Second by watching all the songs and Third by just general love).

Number - Title - Vote 01 - Vote 02 - Vote 03 - Total - Place
01 - Talking With Jennifer -  11 - 10 - 24 - 45 Points - 5th

OMG WOW! I can't believe i picked the top 2, just in reverse order! YAY! For those who follow my blog, you know that Ktos Taki Jak Ty has been my winner/obsession for months. Perfect. Although Jestem is completly awesome in it's own right.

Decent job poland! An entry i can be proud of!

That being said.... i just can't understand how "Ktos Taki Jak Ty" didn't absolutely sweep the final. Not only did she simply have just the best song...but the performance was just magical! Too amazing for words! I just can't understand it!

If anyone could explain how it didn't win, i'd most appreciate it!

My Latvia 2011 Semi Finals

Latvia has had mixed fortunes in Eurovision, from winning in 2002 to just terrible songs like 2009. This year, they decided to return to their most popular format with a new twist. 20 Songs were divided into 2 Semi Finals. In each Semi Final, a Televote chose 3 Finalists and an "Expert" Jury chose 2 Finalists. The 10 Non Qualifying songs advanced to a 3rd SF, where a Televote and an "Expert" Jury each picked 1 Wild Card.

To select my songs, i used the same format, ranking the songs by "Televote" first and then getting a little drunk (I tend to appreciate songs more when slightly toxicated) for the "Jury" placements.

Key -

Basically, for me, it's a two horse race between "Daylight" and "Summer Night". They switch places daily, sometimes hourly. They are both awesome and brilliant and either one would be a perfect entry. "Love is like an Aeroplane"just gets better and better with each listen and "Banjo Laura" and "Angel in Disguise" are both great songs.

I predict "Banjo Laura" will win because it's Lauris and he's not only charming and adorable, but he's like a god to those people.
