Melodifestivalen 2011 - Semi Final 01

Melodifestivalen.  Sweden. The Best. Always Unbeatable. Melodifestivalen is year after year just the best National Final. The whole process is just beautiful and perfect.  And I’m sure this year will be no different. So let’s begin.

Every year, MF likes to make one change, (2002 – The Semi Final System, 2003 – The public chosing the 2 Second Chance songs, 2004 – The Introduction of the SVT commissioned “Wild Cards” and letting the 5th Song in each SF advance to the Second Round of Voting,  2005 – The 2 Rounds of Voting in the Second Chance Round, 2006 – Erm I forget, 2007 – The introduction of the “Knock Out Voting”, 2008 – Erm I Forget, 2009 – Using the “Knock Out Voting) in the Semi Finals, the introduction of the “International” Jury and “International” Wild Card, 2010 – Giving the winning song from the First Round of voting in each SF an automatic pass to the final and the Internet Selection Quarter Final, 2011 – (From Wikipedia) –
Changes[8]
§       All entries were submitted via Melodifestivalen website instead of by post.
§       The selection panel and SVT chose fifteen entries each, instead of the selection panel choosing twenty-seven and SVT four.
§       Foreign songwriters could post entries, but only in combination with at least one Swedish author.
§       Artists will be able to play at least one instrument live on stage.
§       In the regular selection process, it was the only established songwriters who could submit entries. The public were only allowed to submit entries to the web wildcard competition.
§       As in previous years, the songs may be up to three minutes on stage, but a new rule is that they must be at least two minutes long.
§       The whole voting in the final will be changed. The value of the votes are 2 x 473 points, which means that tele-votes and jury-votes represent 50/50 each. If an entry is getting 10% of the tele-votes it will be equivalent to 10% of 473 points. The Swedish jury groups are replaced by 11 international groups. Each jury group gives their points according to the ESC-standard: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 points. If two songs end up at the same position, the people’s votes will overrule the jury-votes.

) The point is, Sweden likes to keep it fresh. I’ll post all my thought about the Web Quarter Final later, but lets move onto the Semi Finals.

Process –

The 32 Songs were divided into 4 Semi Finals. In each Semi Final, there were 2 Rounds of Televoting. In the First Round, the Song receiving the most votes automatically advanced to the Final, the 3 songs receiving the least votes were “Out” and the songs in between advanced to the Second Round. In the Second Round, a Televote chose the other Finalists and the 2 Second Chance Songs.

My Reviews –
01 – Try Again – I really want this song to somehow be louder. Does that make sense?
It’s soooo GOOD! It’s a just a great electronic/dance song! She sounds a bit soft, but that’s the only bad word I have to say about it. Great beat, great sound, great message. AMAZING start to MF 2011!  Awesome! 08 Points out of 10.

02 – Me And My Drum – Hmm…OMG! Swedes CAN rap! This song is actually pretty awesome. I mean it’s not my style, but it’s not at all bad for what it is. It’s got a great beat and it’s kinda awesome. Growing on me for sure! 05 Points out of 10.

03 – Something In Your Eyes – SCHLAGER! YES! Awesome. Astounding. Winner. Ugh. Can’t breathe. So Much. Swedish! Love! Can’t get over. Perfect. Joyful. I can see the wind machines going full blast to dazzle the Swedes now! 12 Points out of 10!

04 – On My Own – Hmm…this song got through in the Web Quarter Final, even though it’s kinda boring. I mean it’s kinda jazzy and I’m sure it’s sentimentality got it through, but it just can’t compete with these songs! Clearly, you’ve got to bring your A game to MF…and this song just falls short. 3 Points out of 10.

05 – Oh My God – OMFG! Yes! Haha this song is so awesome and hilarious. Just so good! 3 Minutes of flirtation and fun. Great sound, nice build and I love the “Cut the gas” part. I love the kinda modern but retro feel of this whole business. So good! So fun!  7 Points out of 10.

06 – Social Butterfly – Eh…this song seems very by the numbers. I feel like it’s trying to plecate everyone and ends up just being sort of bland. It’s cute enough, fast enough (but not too fast, etc. Eh. No hate but no love. 04 Points out of 10.

07 – Desperados (Despair) – Love. So sweet and well understates in a somewhat overstated Semi Final. It’s so cute and original and soft, but is able to hold it’s own completely. Love. Love. Love. Love. So cute! 07 Points out of 10.

08 – In The Club – Yes. Yes. Go Danny! This song is 100% Absolutely win the first Semi Final. I’d bet my cats on it. Awesome. Dancey, fantastic. Awesome. It’s got great build, an AMAZING chorus and I’m sure the performance will be just tremendous. LOVE! 10 Points Out Of 10!

My Prediction –

My Voting –

To select my Favorites, I decided to follow the same format as the actual MF.
Round 01 -
I listened to all 8 songs, in random order, 4 Times. Then I continued to listen to them, in random order on repeat. After each Listen, I took one song out of the running and assigned it Televotes based on what felt right. After I had taken out all 8 songs, the Song with the most votes advanced to my Final. The 2nd – 5th place songs advanced to the Second Round.
