My Review Of Estonia 2011 - Semi Final 01

Estonia has both a great ESC reputation and a bad ESC reputation. They’ve won, they’ve come in the bottom 3 and everything in between. Their last good showing was in ESC 2009, when Rändajad passed through the Semi Final and came 6th overall. Eurolaul (The Estonian National Final for ESC) has had the same basic format for about 2 decades. It’s always between 08 and 10 songs, with either a Televote or a panel of “Expert” Jurors selecting the winner. Personally, I find that when Eurolaul is good, it’s Awesome and when it’s bad, it’s Terrible. However, this year, they are really changing things up. For the first time, Estonia is jumping on the public Semi Finals train. So this year, they chose 20 songs who will compete in 2 Semi Finals (on 02/12 and 02/19). In each SF, a combination of 50% “Expert” Jury and 50% Televote will select 5 Songs from each Semi Final to advance to the Final (on 02/26).  In the Final, Televoting will chose the winner. The 20 songs have been released, however the order of the Semi Finals has yet to be announced. So I had to made up my own. I listened to each song for 30 songs and then divided the 20 songs into 2 Semi Finals, taking care to make them as even as I could, i.e. a similar amount of ballads, fast songs, good songs, terrible songs etc. based on my 30 second listenings.

In each Semi Final, I listened to each song once and then awarded them points in the Eurovision Style for the Televote. Then I listened to the 10 songs 3 more times and awarded them points in the Eurovision Style for the Jury vote.

YAY! I picked 4 out of 5 and i'm completely ok with I Wanna Meet Bob Dylan. Rockefeller Street is by leaps and bounds my winner, and i hope Estonia sends it. Brilliant song and best Estonia's had in YEARS!
